Noggin Sunkers

CA$9.00

The third of five of the Noggin Cove Islands Collection, Noggin Sunkers is a modular cowl featuring an original construction of striking mitred Fair Isle and little diagonal panels of a traditional Shetland lace motif, Da Flee. The cowl is composed of 4 distorted rectangles joined modulary. Two "half-bands" of Fair Isle are worked first and filled in to form two distorted rectangles. The third and fourth rectangles are formed by picking up stitches, working the Fair Isle "half-bands" in the round, and then filling in the inner regions. All stranded colourwork is knit in the round (no steeks are involved!).

November 2021.

Why not mix and match in the collection? The other Noggins:

Noggin Island tam

Noggin Cove mittens

Noggin Point shrug

Stay tuned for the 5th piece to the collection! Coming August of 2025.

28 sts and 42 rows to 10cm / 4” with size A needles after blocking (or needle size required to match gauge).

Fair Isle:

Needles and Notions

The gauges were achieved with the following needle sizes. To work the pattern as written, you must swatch and use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Size A: 2.5mm (US 1.5) 100cm / 40” circular needles for single colour St st

Size B: two 3mm (US 2.5) 100cm / 40” circular needles for Fair Isle bands. *You will technically need only one needle to knit with but you will need a second needle when picking up sts for Fair Isle Band #3.*

You will also need: spare needles or interchangeable cables for holding sts, 3mm to 3.5mm (US D-3 to E-4) crochet hook for surface crochets along the very centre of the Fair Isle bands, stitch markers.

Techniques

* Stranded knitting in the round

* Lace (flat and in the round)

* short rows

* Modified 3-Needle BO

* surface crochet (an embellishment at the very centre of the Fair Isle bands)
