Noggin Island

The first of five of the Noggin Cove Islands Collection, Noggin Island is a modular tam featuring mitred bands of striking Fair Isle and four little panels of a traditional Shetland lace motif, Da Flee. One set of Fair Isle is worked first and then stitches are picked up to work the second set. Stockinette/lace corners are then filled in and the hat is finished with ribbing to desired brim length. The pattern is written with a steeked option (Fair Isle in the round) and a non-steeked option (Fair Isle flat).

Why not mix and match in the collection? The other Noggins:

Gauge

Stockinette:

28 sts and 42 rows to 10cm / 4” with size A needles after blocking (or needle size required to match gauge).

Fair Isle:

28 sts to 10cm / 4” and 14 rounds/rows to 3.7cm / 1.5” with size B needles (and size A needles for single colour rounds) after blocking (or needle size required to match gauge).

Needles and Notions

The gauges were achieved with the following needle sizes. To work the pattern as written, you must swatch and use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Size A: 2.5mm (US 1.5) 60cm / 24” circular needles for single colour St st and single colour rounds in Fair Isle Bands #1 and #2; 100cm / 40” or longer for single colour rounds in Fair Isle Bands #3 and #4 using travelling loop.

Size B: 3mm (US 2.5) 60cm / 24” circular needles for multi colour rounds in Fair Isle Bands #1 and #2; 100cm / 40” or longer for multi colour rounds in Fair Isle Bands #3 and #4 using travelling loop.

You will also need: 3 spare needles or interchangeable cables for holding sts, 3mm to 3.5mm (US D-3 to E-4) crochet hook for surface crochets along the very centre of the Fair Isle bands, a needle at least 2 sizes smaller than your ribbing needle for the Jeny’s Stretch BO, stitch markers. If steeking, I also recommend a felting tool so that you can trim off all of your steek fray.

Techniques

* Stranded knitting in the round (steeks required) OR stranded knitting flat (no steeks required)

* Lace (flat)

* short rows

* surface crochet (an embellishment at the very centre of the Fair Isle bands)
